Title: Economic Valuation of Travel Time Presenter: Hironori Kato
Abstract: In order to measure the benefit stemming from a transport project, the starting point is generally the traveler’s willingness to pay: the amount of money each individual would be willing to pay for the change in his or her circumstances. Typically the dominant benefit component of a transport investment is the travel time saving. This presentation shows the definition of value of travel time (VOTT), demonstrates examples of VOTT estimation and discusses the current practical problems relating VOTT in the context of transport investment in Asia.

Title: Intermodal Freight Transport in Thailand Presenter: Shinya Hanaoka
Abstract: This study developed the framework for evaluating the logistics performance of intermodal freight transportation. Fuzzy set theory was applied to develop a set of performance-based indicators. The relationship insight into the relations between logistics management, mode choice performance and intermodal operation were investigated. This study also developed the multi-objective optimization model of modal split to determine the optimized freight share through different modes or combination of modes to minimize energy consumption, shipment time and shipment charge. The results were employed to verify the necessity of appropriate freight transport policy schemes in intermodal freight transport system.

Title: Feasibility Study of Peak-hour Road Shoulder Usage in Urbanized Motorways Presenter: Shinji Tanaka
Abstract: Due to the recent socio-economical change, large investments for road facilities such as new road construction or road widening are getting difficult. Therefore, we proposed a measure to increase number of lanes depending on traffic situations within the existing road width using the road shoulder space dynamically. Then the feasibility in the aspect of effectiveness and safety of this measure are examined   by traffic detector data analyses and driving simulator experiments.
